Anaconda MT Real Estate

Anaconda, MT. The name was unusual, but the real estate was cheap when we first heard about the town. In fact, it was a photo in a real estate guide of a nice looking home for $18,900 that made us detour from our route down I-90 from Missoula. The town was only six miles off the freeway, after all, and we wanted to see if there really were nice homes that we could afford in a beautiful place.

It was certainly a beautiful place. Anaconda sits between the hills that rise up into mountains on three sides. Mount Haggin, looking down on the town from the south, is 10,600 feet high. It was May when we arrived, and there was still a lot of snow up there. The highway continues past the town and up into the mountains, to Georgetown Lake and the Discovery Ski Area.

The town itself is full of classic old buildings, many of them on the National Register of Historic Sites. The courthouse and the Hearst Free Library in particular are worth at least driving by or visiting. The houses, on the other hand, vary from beautiful old victorian homes to falling-down shacks. And the one that was $18,900? A pretty pink house that was ready to live in. We bought it the next day for $17,500.

But that was back in 2002. There were dozens of homes available for less than $50,000 at the time. There may still be some in that price range at the moment, but they are likely to be serious fixer-uppers. Perhaps it won't be long now before there is nothing under $100,000 that is ready to move into.
